Darsie First ListApril 14, 2006 From: Darsie Bowden
To: WPA-L The following is a list of institutions that have configured some kind of employment stability in the form of renewable contracts for at least some portion of their non TT writing faculty. I’ve compiled it over the last two weeks from WPA-L, so it is neither comprehensive nor complete, and I cannot vouch for its accuracy. What I can say is that it includes institutions that are union as well as non-union, large and small, research and teaching. It strikes me as a testament to the work being done—and WPAs and others are working quite hard—to improve working conditions for non TT instructors. But it also a call to do more. The roadblocks are complex—both economic and ideological. Many people are already working with the AAUP to arrive at a workable, fair solution (Eileen Schell, Pat Sullivan, to name just two). At Pat’s suggestion, I also spoke to Robert Kreiser at AAUP. I can’t say his response provided me with a whole lot of new information—one of the goals of the AAUP is to fight for equitable working conditions, and they apparently feel as stymied as we do about the situation at colleges and universities.
