Rethinking and Redesigning Basic Writing Courses

Since Basic Writing courses occupy an interesting space in English Departments across the country, where their purpose, goals, and outcomes vary from campus to campus, these classes give instructors a great degree of “play” in terms of rethinking and redesigning Basic Writing courses.

We have focused on five strategies in this module, which include:

• Fostering collaborations
  • Incorporating interdisciplinary and collaborative practices through learning communities and linked pedagogies
  • Fostering collaboration between secondary and college writing classes
• Utilizing literature in the classroom
• Integrating poetry
• Using Activity Theory to inform class design
